As this prefecture is the largest one in Japan, so purchase a JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is good idea to travel around this lovely place. JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is a special discounted pass available to foreign traveller visiting Japan under the status of “Temporary visitor”. Thanks to the unlimited access to JR Hokkaido Rail and certain buses, you can travel from Hakodate to Abashiri and purchase the 3 Day, 5 Day, or 7 Day purchase on consecutive days.

EXCHANGE COUPON DELIVERY OPTION

  • A delivery and handling charge may apply (Toll Express Mail is free, or $20.00 for TNT Courier). Delivery can take up to 5 working days from the date of issue. You will be notified by email when your exchange coupon has been sent out.  
  • Delivery can only be made within Australia to a residential street address or business street address. Deliveries cannot be made to a PO box, PARCEL COLLECT/ PARCEL LOCKER address or overseas.
  • Courier requires a signature upon delivery. Please provide a street address where you will be during normal business hours. If unable to sign for the delivery, please select Express Post.
  • Once sent to the given delivery address, JTB Australia does not take any responsibility in the occasion of any lost or stolen documents.
  • Incorrect delivery address notification at time of booking will incur a re-issue fee and delivery fee. 

RAIL PASS ELIGIBILITY

  • Only travellers who are visiting Japan under the entry status of ‘Temporary Visitor’, and have a passport bearing this stamp can use this pass. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, ‘Temporary Visitor’ status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.
  • Japanese passport holders cannot use this pass. However in the rare case when travellers have dual passports (Japanese & other), unless your valid non Japanese passport is stamped with ‘Temporary Visitor’, issuance of JR pass will be refused.

EXCHANGE IN JAPAN

  • You require an exchange coupon in final documentation before departing Australia, as you will need to exchange this for your actual Rail Pass in Japan. Your exchange coupon must be exchanged within 3 months from when the exchange coupon is issued. 
  • The exchange order is valid for three months from the date of issue. You must exchange it in Japan at a valid exchange office within these three months in order to receive your actual Pass. If you fail to make the exchange within the three months your exchange coupon will no longer be valid and you will not be able to receive the actual Pass. 
  • To exchange date of the pass, once the pass has been obtained, can no longer be changed.

RAIL PASS VALIDITY

  • The valid period of these passes are 3, 5, 7 day consecutive days. Also a 4 days flexible pass which can be used in any 4 days within 1 month.  
  • After exchange in Japan, the starting date written on the Rail Pass cannot be changed.
  • The lines included in the pass: the JR Hokkaido metro lines and busses.
  • There is an extra charge for the sleeping car and carpet car.
  • The JR Hokkaido bus routes available to pass holders are limited
  • There is an extra charge for boarding the Twinkle Bus
  • The 3-Day, and 5-Day 7-Day pass allows you to choose the starting day, and can be used for either 3 or 5 or 7 consecutive days from the date of issuance.
  • The date of use cannot be selected with the Flexible 4-Day Ticket. It is effective the day you either purchase or exchange it, that being day one, and continues to be effective for ten days in which it can be used any four days either consecutive or not.
  • With the Hokkaido Rail Pass you can board unreserved seating or reserved seating on all JR Hokkaido local trains, rapid trains and limited express trains.If you wish to ride in Green Car (reserved seating) for the limited express, you will need to purchase a ticket for both the limited express and reserved seating.
  • You can also board JR Hokkaido buses within Sapporo. Of the JR Hokkaido Bus Lines, routes between Sapporo – Asahikawa, Monbetsu, Hiro’s , Kiroro, Obihiro, Erimo, Shin Sapporo – Atsubetsu Stadium, JR Shiroishi Sta. – Sapporo Dome and temporary buses are not included. Express buses between Sapporo and Otaru can be boarded if the bus is a JR Hokkaido bus. (Chuo Buses are NOT included)
  • If you ride trains that overlap with east Japan rail lines, the boarding portion of the ticket will include the last station of the JR Hokkaido Line which is Naka Oguni Station, and the fare will cover the first (or last) stop on the JR Hokkaido Line.

SEAT RESERVATIONS

  • You cannot make seat reservations until you have exchanged the Pass in Japan.
  • Non-reserved ordinary class cars can be accessed freely.
  • To access the platforms, show your Pass to the JR Hokkaido staff located at the gate to the platform.
  • To reserve a seat, ask the JR Hokkaido staff at the the ticket office.

EXCHANGE COUPON CANCELLATION

  • An exchange coupon can be refunded within 1 year of purchase. A 20% cancellation fee will be charged. 10% of the booking will be charged as a cancelation fee, 10% will be held in credit for future travel of up to 12 months. Any delivery fee or credit card surcharge is non refundable. Please note that if you have exchanged the Pass in Japan, the ticket is non-changeable and non-refundable.
  • You will need to send the original exchange coupon back to the office of purchase for a refund. 
  • Any changes made to date, type or length of a pass will be treated as a cancellation and cancellation fees will apply.
  • If you forget to take your Exchange Coupon to Japan, JTB is unable to send it to Japan nor send by email, as it’s a physical coupon. Japan Railway Companies will not accept any scanned copies or email confirmations of the Exchange Coupons.
  • Also, if you lose or stolen your Exchange Coupon before you activate it, you may be able to get a refund. Cancellation fees will apply for a refund.
  • If JTB finds the Exchange Coupon to be used you will be re-charged for the full amount of the passes on the credit card used to purchase the original Exchange Coupon. Alternatively, should the original coupons be found, they must be returned JTB Australia immediately.
  • If your Exchange Coupons have already been activated, you won’t be able to get a refund.
  • Lost / Stolen: 

    Before departing Australia:

    Purchase a new pass from JTB again. After 3 months if the lost pass has not been exchange/activated, JTB will refund the full amount of the lost original pass OR fill out a consent form (contact us for more information).

    After departing Australia – before rail pass exchange:

    Purchase a new pass on the JR Pass official website. After 3 months if the lost pass has not been exchange/activated, you may be able to get a refund. Above standard cancellation fees apply for a refund.

    Strictly non-refundable. Purchase a new pass on the JR Pass official website.

  • After purchase and voucher issuance, a re-issue fee of $60 per change will apply for any name correction (This applies to corrections only. Completely different names will be treated as a cancellation), plus any delivery and credit card surcharges will apply ($8.50 Express Post, $21-Courier). You must send the original exchange coupon back to the office of purchase.
  • Exchange coupons are valid for use within 3 months from the date of issuance and this validity period cannot be altered or extended. Any passes that are issued and go unused within the validity period may be re-issued within 12 months for $60, plus any applicable delivery and credit card surcharges.
  • Neither an exchange coupon nor a Japan Rail Pass can be reissued if lost or stolen.

JR East-South Hokkaido Pass

6 DAY PASS

The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is a special discounted pass available only to foreign travelers visiting Japan under the entry status of “Temporary visitor”. Visitors can use this pass to travel from Shimoda in Izu Peninsula to as far as Sapporo and Otaru. The pass is valid for six consecutive days and allows unlimited access to JR East lines.

EXCHANGE COUPON DELIVERY

  • A delivery and handling charge may apply (Toll Express Mail is free, or $20.00 for TNT Courier). Delivery can take up to 5 working days from the date of issue. You will be notified by email when your exchange coupon has been sent out.  
  • Delivery can only be made within Australia to a residential street address or business street address. Deliveries cannot be made to a PO box, PARCEL COLLECT/ PARCEL LOCKER address or overseas.
  • Courier requires a signature upon delivery. Please provide a street address where you will be during normal business hours. If unable to sign for the delivery, please select Express Post.
  • Incorrect delivery address notification at time of booking will incur a re-issue fee and delivery fee. 

RAIL PASS ELIGIBILITY

  • Only travellers who are visiting Japan under the entry status of ‘Temporary Visitor’, and have a passport bearing this stamp can use this pass. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, ‘Temporary Visitor’ status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.
  • Japanese passport holders cannot use this pass. However in the rare case when travellers have dual passports (Japanese & other), unless your valid non Japanese passport is stamped with ‘Temporary Visitor’, issuance of JR pass will be refused.

EXCHANGE IN JAPAN

  • You require an exchange coupon in final documentation before departing Australia, as you will need to exchange this for your actual Rail Pass in Japan. Your exchange coupon must be exchanged within 3 months from when the exchange coupon is issued. 
  • The exchange order is valid for three months from the date of issue. You must exchange it in Japan at a valid exchange office within these three months in order to receive your actual Pass. If you fail to make the exchange within the three months your exchange coupon will no longer be valid and you will not be able to receive the actual Pass. 
  • To exchange date of the pass, once the pass has been obtained, can no longer be changed.
  • The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass Exchange Order is valid for three months from the date of issue.  You must exchange it at a JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass Exchange Office (in Japan) within these three months in order to receive your JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass.  If you fail to make the exchange within these three months then you will not be able to receive your pass.
  • The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is only available to non-Japanese passport holders with a short-term visa to stay in Japan for no longer than 90 days. Japanese passport holders can NOT use this pass.
  • To exchange the voucher for the Pass you will need your passport.
  • The start date of the Pass can no longer be changed once the voucher has been exchanged.

RAIL PASS VALIDITY

  • The lines include in the pass:
    • JR Hokkaido Lines
    • JR East Lines (including BRT*)
    • Izu Kyuko Line
    • Tokyo Monorail
    • Aoimori Railway
    • IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway
    • Sendai Airport Transit
    • The following local and rapid trains that directly run between on Tobu Railway lines between Tobu-Nikko/Kinugawa-onsen and Shimo-imaichi, including SPACIA Kinugawa, etc. Also, direct limited express trains between Shimo-imaichi and Kurihashi Stations on Tobu Railway Lines.
  • Notes:
    • * Bus rapid transit.
    • ** This pass might be used for Tobu Railway Lines whereas either the departure or arrival station is on a JR Line.
    • The JR EAST Rail PASS is not valid for the Tokaido Shinkansen (between Tokyo and Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka) as they are operated by different rail companies.
    • GALA Yuzawa station is operated only in Winter and Spring.
    • The JR EAST Rail PASS is not valid for JR buses.
    • The JR EAST Rail PASS is not valid between Goryokaku and Kikonai Stations on the “South Hokkaido Railway” line.

SEAT RESERVATIONS

  • With the Pass, no additional fee is required when reserving seats. 
  • Reservation for the seats can only be done locally at Travel Service Centers (View Plazas) and JR Ticket Offices (Midori-no-madoguchi) located in JR East stations, as well as at Travel Service Centers (Twinkle Plazas) and JR Ticket Offices (Midori-no-madoguchi) located in JR Hokkaido stations. Your pass is required when reserving a designated seat.
  • Non-reserved Ordinary Class cars can be accessed freely. 
  • To access the platforms, show your pass to the JR East staff located at the platform gates. 
  • To reserve a seat, ask the JR East staff at the the ticket office. 

EXCHANGE COUPON CANCELLATION

  • An exchange coupon can be refunded within 1 year of purchase. A 20% cancellation fee will be charged. 10% of the booking will be charged as a cancelation fee, 10% will be held in credit for future travel of up to 12 months. Any delivery fee or credit card surcharge is non refundable. Please note that if you have exchanged the Pass in Japan, the ticket is non-changeable and non-refundable.
  • You will need to send the original exchange coupon back to the office of purchase for a refund. 
  • Any changes made to date, type or length of a pass will be treated as a cancellation and cancellation fees will apply.
  • If you forget to take your Exchange Coupon to Japan, JTB is unable to send it to Japan nor send by email, as it’s a physical coupon. Japan Railway Companies will not accept any scanned copies or email confirmations of the Exchange Coupons.
  • Also, if you lose or stolen your Exchange Coupon before you activate it, you may be able to get a refund. Cancellation fees will apply for a refund.
  • If JTB finds the Exchange Coupon to be used you will be re-charged for the full amount of the passes on the credit card used to purchase the original Exchange Coupon. Alternatively, should the original coupons be found, they must be returned JTB Australia immediately.
  • If your Exchange Coupons have already been activated, you won’t be able to get a refund.
  • Lost / Stolen: 

    Before departing Australia:

    Purchase a new pass from JTB again. After 3 months if the lost pass has not been exchange/activated, JTB will refund the full amount of the lost original pass OR fill out a consent form (contact us for more information).

    After departing Australia – before rail pass exchange:

    Purchase a new pass on the JR Pass official website. After 3 months if the lost pass has not been exchange/activated, you may be able to get a refund. Above standard cancellation fees apply for a refund.

    After departing Australia – after rail pass exchange:

    Strictly non-refundable. Purchase a new pass on the JR Pass official website.

  • After purchase and voucher issuance, a re-issue fee of $60 per change will apply for any name correction (This applies to corrections only. Completely different names will be treated as a cancellation), plus any delivery and credit card surcharges will apply ($8.50 Express Post, $21 Courier).   • Exchange coupons are valid for use within 3 months from the date of issuance and this validity period cannot be altered or extended. Any passes that are issued and go unused within the validity period may be re-issued within 12 months for $60, plus any applicable delivery and credit card surcharges.
  • Neither an exchange coupon nor a Japan Rail Pass can be reissued if lost or stolen.

The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is a special discounted pass available only to foreign travelers visiting Japan under the entry status of “Temporary visitor”. Visitors can use this pass to travel from Tokyo, through Tohoku (the region north of Tokyo) to as far as Sapporo. The pass is valid for six consecutive days and allows unlimited access to JR East lines. (There is one bullet train station in Hokkaido connected to the north of Tohoku, see the map below for details)
